DIY Backdrops: Product Photography on a Budget

by | Dec 17, 2023

When it comes to creating product photos, you don’t need to look far for unique and budget-friendly DIY backdrops. Your home is a treasure trove of materials just waiting to be transformed into stunning backgrounds.

In this post, I’ll share some everyday items you can use and how to style them for your product photography.

1. Bedsheets and Fabrics

Plain bedsheets, tablecloths, or curtains make excellent backdrops. Choose neutral colours like white or pastels for a clean and classic look. To style them, lay the fabric flat and create gentle folds to add texture. For an extra layer of depth, place an RGB panel light underneath the cloth.

2. Wooden Surfaces

Wooden surfaces offer a versatile and natural backdrop option for your product photography. Whether it’s a wooden table, floor, or even a simple wooden chopping board, these surfaces can infuse your images with a rustic and warm charm.

3. Old Book Pages

For an artistic and vintage touch, repurpose old book pages as a backdrop. Tear out pages from damaged books or photocopied pages with intriguing text or illustrations. Tape the pages on a wall or a large board, allowing them to overlap or curl for added visual interest. This backdrop works wonderfully for products with a literary or nostalgic theme.

4. Glass, Mirrors and Acrylic Sheets

To add a touch of professionalism to your images try using using glass, mirrors or an acrylic sheet as a reflective surface. Lay down your base backdrop, then place the acrylic sheet on top. Alternatively, experiment with glass and mirrors for a distinctive reflection.

Be sure to clean the reflective surface thoroughly to remove any smudges or fingerprints!

5. Outdoors

Using nature as a backdrop, creates a simple yet striking effect on your product photography. Try placing your products on a bed of leaves, petals, or even grass. And if it’s a clear day with blue skies, try holding the product up and using the sky as a background.

DIY backdrops lies in simplicity and resourcefulness. From bedsheets and wooden surfaces to mirrors and nature’s bounty, each backdrop offers unique visual appeal to complement your products’ aesthetics.
