Skip the Photoshoot. Try 3D Animation Instead!

by

Have you ever scrolled past a beauty brand’s social media and thought ‘How did they make that??’ Chances are a 3D product animator was behind it.

That’s what I do! And if you have ever wondered what a 3D product animator actually does, you are in the right place. In this post I am breaking down exactly what the job involves, what the process looks like, and if you are a brand, how to work with one.

So, what does a 3D product animator actually do?

At its core, a 3D product animator creates photorealistic or stylised moving visuals of physical products, without ever needing the product in front of them. Using Blender, I model, light, texture, and animate products for campaigns, social content, and product launches.

Think of it as a photography studio that’s entirely digital no logistics, no shipping samples, no reshoots. Just high-end product visuals built from scratch, and one of the fastest-growing skills brands are investing in right now across beauty, skincare, cosmetics, and beverage.

A day in the life: what the creative process looks like

Every project is different, but most 3D product animation workflows follow a similar pattern. Here’s how I typically work through a project from brief to final render.

3D modelling the product

I build the product digitally, every curve, cap, and label, using reference images or technical specs supplied by the brand. Accuracy here is everything.

Materials & texturing

This is where the product starts to look real! Glass, chrome, matte packaging, foil labels: these are all recreated using shader nodes and texture maps in Blender.

Lighting setup

Lighting is what separates a good render from a great one. A well-lit scene communicates luxury, energy, or calm depending on what the brand needs.

Animation & camera work

Adding movement like product spins, close-up reveals, and particle effects, then setting up camera paths that guide the viewer’s eye in a deliberate, cinematic way.

Rendering & delivery

The final scene is rendered out (this can take anywhere from minutes to hours depending on complexity) and delivered to the brand, ready for social, web, or campaign use.

Why brands are investing in 3D product animation

The demand for product animation for brands has grown enormously and it’s not just big-budget campaigns anymore. Indie beauty founders, beverage brands, and cosmetics businesses are all using CGI product visuals because the returns are real.

Why brands choose 3D

  • No need to ship or photograph physical samples, ideal for pre-launch campaigns
  • Consistent, on-brand visuals across every touchpoint
  • Perfect for product launches where the product doesn’t physically exist yet
  • Repurposable assets: one animation can be cut into multiple formats
  • Elevated brand perception, as high-end visuals signal a premium product

For the creatives: is 3D product animation a viable career?

Yes!! The path from learning Blender to landing paid client work is shorter than most people expect. You don’t need to be an expert, you need to understand lighting in Blender, materials, basic animation principles, and how to work with a brand brief. That’s the foundation everything else builds from.

The most common mistake is trying to learn everything at once, jumping between tutorials and never finishing anything. The 3D artists who book clients aren’t the most technically advanced, they’re the ones who follow a clear process and see projects through to completion.

What does a 3D product animator’s portfolio look like?

A strong 3D product animation portfolio doesn’t need to be huge. Three to five polished pieces in the beauty, cosmetics, or beverage space is more than enough to start attracting brand clients. A render of a serum bottle or an animated compact tells a brand far more than a technically impressive abstract scene.

How to work with a 3D product animator as a brand

If you’re a brand manager reading this, here’s what a smooth collaboration looks like from my end.

What to prepare before reaching out

  • Product images from multiple angles (or existing 3D files if you have them)
  • Brand guidelines: fonts, colours, mood references
  • Platform and format requirements (Instagram Reel, website hero, etc.)
  • A rough timeline, including your product launch date
  • Examples of 3D animations or visual styles you like

The more context upfront, the faster and more accurate the process. I’m not just executing a brief, I’m interpreting your brand and translating it into motion.

What should you expect to pay?

Every project is scoped individually based on complexity, deliverables, and turnaround time. Think of it as commissioning a timeless piece of content rather than buying a stock asset. Once your product exists as a digital file, the content possibilities are endless! Different lighting setups, seasonal backdrops, colour variants, new campaign animations, all without a reshoot.

The better question isn’t “how much does it cost?” but “what is a reusable, premium visual asset worth to my brand long-term?”
