If you are struggling to get realistic glass in Blender, I want you to know that it is not just you. Glass is genuinely one of the trickier materials to get right, and when it is not working it is incredibly frustrating because it is not always obvious why. I struggled with it too.
The good news is that once you understand what is actually going on with a glass material, it starts to make a lot more sense!
It is not about transparency. It is about refraction.
This is the key takeaway from everything I cover in the TikTok, and it is the shift in thinking that makes the biggest difference. Most people approach glass by focusing on making it see-through. But transparency alone is not what makes glass convincing. What your eye reads as real glass is the way it bends and distorts the light passing through it. That bending is refraction, and it is controlled by one setting inside the Glass BSDF node called IOR, short for Index of Refraction.
A value between 1.52 and 1.55 is the sweet spot for clear glass because it matches how real world glass actually behaves. It is a small detail but it is the difference between a material that reads as glass and one that just reads as transparent.
Physical accuracy and visual accuracy are not always the same thing
This is something that takes a little while to get comfortable with but is worth understanding early. You can have a technically correct IOR value and still have a render that does not look right, because your lighting setup, the thickness of your glass geometry, and your overall scene all affect how the material reads. The number is a starting point, not a rule. Learning to trust your eye over the correct value is one of the most useful skills you can develop as a 3D artist.
Imperfection is what sells it
Real glass is not perfect. It has tiny surface variations that catch the light and give reflections a natural, organic quality. When a glass material is too clean it reads as digital, even when everything else in the scene is working. Adding a small amount of surface noise is what bridges that gap and pushes the material into photoreal territory. It is a subtle addition but it is one of those details that you cannot unsee once you know it is there.
